Report Brood XIX Periodical Cicadas

Report Brood XIX Periodical Cicadas in your area.

In order to help with the mapping of Brood XIX's distribution range, below is a form for you to fill in to report your Brood XIX Peridocal Cicada sightings. With todays leading-edge technology and the use of the internet it is now possible to update existing distribution maps for all known broods of periodical cicadas.

The Use of GPS Coordinates and Complete Addresses.

With the use of GPS Coordinates and complete addresses, we can take this information and insert it into a database and generate an accurate distribution map very much like the one that can be found here. Even if you do not know the GPS (latitude and longitude) if you provide a complete address, these addresses can be "Geocoded" and will give us the latitude and longitude data. So please be as accurate as possible.

The Importance of Negative Records

Remember, when submitting your Brood XIX Periodical Cicada sighting reports, we would also like to include negative data as well. If you believe that back in 1994 you experienced Brood XIX in your area, it will be easy to check this against existing distribution maps. This type of data will give indications of receding and changing boundary lines which may be caused by a myriad of things like land developement, partial extinctions in some areas, diseases and other cool and interesting stuff.

How the Data is Used

The data is used in multiple areas on our web site including the sightings section and species section and is also shared with other researchers currently working on Periodical Cicadas like Magicicada.org. This form is divided into several sections:

  1. Your Information - While this information is required, your last name, street address and email addresses are never shared or published. However we may use your first name when adding information to the cicada sightings section of the web site.
  2. Sighting Location Information - This information is required in order for us to properly geocode the sighting location of the cicada and to place a marker on a Google Map of the United States. Your information along with hundreds of others will make up a distribution map of Brood XIX periodical cicadas. In addition, town and state information is also published in the cicada sightings section but never the address.
  3. What did you See? - This section is very important. Please indicate by choosing as many of the radio buttons that apply. For example, if you see immatures, nymphs, skins and tenerals then select those by estimating the total numbers of each.
  4. GPS Coordinates - While not required for filling in the form, if you know the exact GPS (latitude and longitude) of a sighting location, it will greatly reduce the time and effort spent in attempting to geocode the location based on the sighting location information requested above.
  5. Attach an Image - If you you wish to share your images, you can attach them here. When images are supplied, they will be posted in the Sightings section of the web site. Right now you can attach up to three separate images by clicking the browse button next to each image form field. Once you attach your images and have filled out the other information, simply hit the submit button.

Use this form to report Brood XIX periodical cicadas in your area.
