Description: Islands are really interesting places to study biodiversity. In fact, some species because of their isolation can take on a myriad of different traits as opposed to their mainland counterparts. Here is a calling song of T. auletes from Martha's Vineyard taken in 2006. While it is generally known that this species is considered a "dusk caller" i.e; only calling at sunset, on Martha's Vineyard, T. auletes called throughout the day.

Tibicen lyricen and Tibicen tibicen calling

Description: During survey work for Tibicen tibicen in Connecticut in 2006, I managed to capture the calling songs of Tibicen lyricen and Tibicen tibicen in Windsor, Connecticut at the Loomis Chaffee school. I hate the sound of my voice in this video, this is why I hardly ever speak in videos. Tibicen lyricen - also known as the "Lyric Cicada" to me sounds like a droning air conditioner and Tibicen tibicen is an easily recognizeable sound because it is used in a lot of thriller and horror movies.

Tibicen tibicen alarm squawk

Description: Often times when male cicadas are captured (especially the mature wild-caught ones) will often times let out an alarm squawk. It is thought that this loud squawking (caused by the timbals in males) is to startle a potential predator into dropping it, affording the cicada the ability to fly away. Since a cicada's calling song is species-specific, I like to record the alarm squawks of individual males that I have captured for future analysis.

Tibicen auletes calling song

Description: My friend and colleague, Mike Neckermann recorded this exiting video of a calling Tibicen auletes at dusk in 2006. While T. auletes is known to exist in Connecticut, it can only be found in a very small area and is on Connecticut's Species of Concern list.

Cicada Killer Orientation Video

Description: No, not that kind of orientation. This is one of several videos recorded showing the start of a female cicada killer oriention behavior. During these begining stages the female walks around and then starts to perform short flights thus orienting itself to the borrow's entrance. This helps during the return flight from a hunt for a cicada. If the female is burdoned with a paralyzed cicada this enables it to quickly find the entrance then slip in.

Tibicen Teneral Cicada Breathing

Description: Another cool contribution from Roy Troutman. A cicada (and most insects for that matter) breath through their abdomens through little openings known as "spiracles". When in teneral form, you can really see the large spiracles working that are located laterally on the abdomen. A very cool video.
