About the Calling Songs Video Category

All cicada calling songs have been placed in this video section. You may notice that there seems to be multiple calling songs for the same species. This is intentional because most of these songs come from different parts of the United States and may hold clues into regional calling variations from the same species. Think of them as "different accents".

Description: Islands are really interesting places to study biodiversity. In fact, some species because of their isolation can take on a myriad of different traits as opposed to their mainland counterparts. Here is a calling song of T. auletes from Martha's Vineyard taken in 2006. While it is generally known that this species is considered a "dusk caller" i.e; only calling at sunset, on Martha's Vineyard, T. auletes called throughout the day.

Tibicen lyricen calling song

Play T. lyricen calling video Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2005-09-05
Description: This video was taken of a Tibicen lyricen cicada calling in a group of small trees in a nursery in Northern Connecticut. T. lyricen cicadas are very abundant in New England. They do exhibit some strange behaviors like calling while walking along the branch of a tree. I have even noted them calling in flight as well. On this day, I netted a male T. lyricen with a large extension net, it walked right onto the net and continued to call all the way to the ground and only stopped calling when I grabbed it. Then it let out a rather large alarm squawk. I guess I totally surprised it.
