Cicada Sighting from Ludlow, MA

This is from Ludlow, Massachusetts, I believe it is one of your Cicada's. WE have never seen anything like this before. Please write back and let us know if this is one or not. We can give you more information at that time. My brother took this photo outside of his house, one one of their flowers. Beautiful photo, and close-up.

Thank-you,
Sharon

Hi Sharon,

First off thanks for the very cool photo. Unfortunately, this insect isn't a cicada. This is actually what is known as a Clearwing Hummingbird Moth. The tails on these moths actually remind me of a crayfish or lobster. They feed on nectar of most flowers. There are many species of Clearwing Moths.

Thanks for the photo!
